Kirana Hand-made Paper Products

Our Kirana income-generation group was started in the village of Kadahalli in 2000. A total of 25 poor women in the village have been trained in making recycled paper which is used for hand-made paper products like note-pads, writing paper, cards and bags. They are thus provided regular employment. What is heartening is that within a short period, the women have grown in self-respect and gained the respect of the community. They have taken a number of initiatives for bringing about improvements in their village social and sanitation conditions. The unit is sustained by its innovative and attractive products, which find markets within the country as well as abroad, including in the United States, the UK and Germany.

Kirana Group's Paper Products

"We have gained much knowledge from being in Kirana. It has also enabled us to look after our children and work at the same time. Previously, we had to ask either our husbands or our parents when we needed money, but now, we can look after our needs from what we earn at Kirana. It has given us the confidence to stand up for ourselves on many fronts. We had to deal with husbands who drank, and also take care of our children. Our earnings now help with medical and other expenses."
